Happiness, what is that? Is it something to aim for or something to be? Many of us place conditions on our happiness. We tell ourselves, I’ll be happy when I get this or when I achieve that or when I lose this. Then we miss out on all the things throughout our day that can bring us joy because of this one condition. I have also heard that happiness is a state of mind. We just have to be happy. How do you do that?
I think happiness can be found in our daily habits. The things we do every day that brings us simple joy. Yes, it can be attained at the end of a finish line and yes our mindset plays a part. But since our habits define us then it certainly affects out happiness.
Daily Habits for Happiness
Sometimes you need to produce the action before the feeling appears. Whenever you look at yourself in the mirror today, smile and think something positive. Doing the action and expressing something positive increases the likelihood of lifting your mood. It never hurts to try. Additionally consider smiling more often at others. Smiles are contagious. Smiling at someone can make then feel good. Watching someone return your smile does the same for you. A kind gesture at no cost.
Doing something for someone without seeking reward can create a warm feeling in our hearts. We feel better our ourselves and give something meaningful to another. It can be as simply as sharing a smile or listening ear or as grand as helping someone in debt. Fill your life with random acts of kindness and watch your state of being improve.
Get quality sleep
I don’t know about you but when I am sleep-deprived, my mood goes downhill as the day goes by. Getting proper rest is essential for your wellbeing and it can greatly impact your mood. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night. Consider implementing a night time routine to unwind properly before bed.
Spend time in nature
A wonderful feeling of connection and peace always fills my body and mind when I immerse myself in nature. Mother nature never fails to rejuvenate and ground me. Make time to spend time with her daily, especially when the weather is fair. You will surely get a mood lift. Spending time outdoors is a great way to melt away the day’s stress and clear your mind of clutter.
Enjoy time with loved ones
Make it a part of your daily routine to spend quality time with the persons that light you up. Connecting with others on a deep level, boost our feelings of belong and make us feel good. The more supported we feel, the happier we feel in our lives.
Move your body
Our bodies are like machines, they need to be serviced regularly to stay in good condition. If you pack it away and don’t take care of it gets out shape. Sometimes we fail to notice how much our lack of movement affects our mental state. When I spend all they sitting, hunched over a screen with little break to no breaks I always feel irritated at the end. Even if I had a productive day. I feel stiff and stressed. But after a nice stretch or walk, and the kinks are gone, I feel so relieved and much happier. You don’t have to do an hour long workout to get the same effect. Try a 7 minute HIIT workout, a 5 minute jog, a 15 stretch or whatever you enjoy and watch the effects. Your body will thank you and you will feel more confident as well.
Start the day on your terms
So many of us stay up late and wake up after snoozing the alarm five times only to rush out of the house or stumble into a Zoom meeting looking dishevelled. Then we were go through our day feeling flustered and unprepared. We feel like everything is going wrong and by the day’s end we’re exhausted and stressed.
It is important to make time in the mornings to set the mood for our day. Get enough sleep and wake up at a reasonable to enjoy our mornings. We can take our time getting ready, fit in some form of movement and get our minds prepare for the day. You leave the house in time to get to work or organise for that Zoom meeting. You had a nice breakfast to give you energy and are ready for the day.

You are 100% responsible for you. Your thoughts, reactions, attitude and feelings are yours to control or manipulate to your advantage. Own that and watch your life transform and your happiness soar.
