Confidence is important because when you trust in and can rely on yourself you are more inclined to try unfamiliar things, take initiative and be proactive. You are aware of your value and worth in life. Your confidence invites and encourages people to have faith in you because they can see your self-assurance.
Self-confidence, in the words of Amy Landino, allows you to “Go After The Life You Want.” When you are confident your focus is on achieving your goals and delivering quality instead of worrying about your ability to perform tasks or the judgement of others.
Ways to Boost your Confidence.
- Know your why: Understanding why you want to be confident keeps you motivated.
- Fake it until you make it. Portray yourself as confident by using the right body language: stand tall, relax your fists, maintain eye contact, smile.
- Just do it: One way to build confidence is by going out there and trying unfamiliar things whether or not we “feel” confident. Self-doubt is a part of the process and we need to learn to embrace.
- Challenge negative self-talk: You cannot believe every thought passing through your mind about yourself as most are untrue and unfounded. Try doing the very things your mind says you cannot. It might not be as scary as you thought.
- Stop comparing yourself to others: comparison can be detrimental to your mental health. It leads to envy, jealousy and discontent with your life and self. Instead, remind yourself that everyone has their own path to travel at their own time. Embrace who you are. Life is not a race but a journey.
- Practice self-compassion: Everyone makes mistakes or fails and we have to be gentle and patient with ourselves when that happens. When you judge yourself too harshly or degrade yourself, you are less likely to try again. Remember that setbacks are a part of life.
- Self-care: It is important to take care of your mind and body. Our physical and mental wellness affects how we perceive ourselves and abilities.
- Manage your emotions: How we feel affects how we see the world. Learning to regulate our emotions and master our reactions will affect positively affect our confidence.
- Have a growth mindset: If you believe that your abilities are fixed from birth, you are more likely to give up when you fail. However, if you have a growth mindset, you will see failure as a part of the process.
- Let go of the need for control: Learn to let go and embrace the uncertainties of life. Trying to control everything only diminishes your self-confidence. Much of life is not in our control and when we cannot control it, the trust in our abilities reduce.
